    More about me...

I wanted to create a section where I could answer any q's and talk about things that doesn't quite fit into my "thoughts of the day" kind of theme in my blog. (ie: what kind of research I do may be very boring to most i'm sure).

I know I know, you're thinking, "I wish I knew more about what is being done in neuroscience to understand working memory." Well, since it's fresh on my mind I thought I'd share a little bit about the work I've been studying.

Working memory is the brain's ability to hold information relevant to behavioral goals/tasks. It is observed in brain activity that is not linked to sensory input. In computational neuroscience, researchers are using modeling to answer questions about how this works. One study shows that dopamine, as a neuromodulator, may play a role in allowing the brain to hold information and for this activity to not be interrupted by other stimuli/distracting input (robustness). It is also hypothesized that inhibitory neurons play a role. I'm trying to figure out how a combination of these neural dynamics might be studied/modeled.

Hi there. :) Interesting. I don't know that that would have any application for what we do, but we do do biological research, in the field of neuroscience...the specifics of which of which are how chemical and biological agents interact with the body and the human brain. I am -not- a member of the scientific team, as I am the IT Manager, so I can't speak to the specifics of the scientific research. But I was curious if your research would in any way be able to play any kind of role in the kind of work we do. Listen, Jenna, can you drop me an email privately, and tell me more, and I can tell you more about what we do, and see if there is any common ground between our research, and yours? My email is bootjockey@midmaine.com (and if you don't feel comfortable with that, I understand. But who knows? I believe that there can be unique ways of doing things! One of my personal interests is in using CD-Rom and DVD-Rom media as a collection medium for air sampling of micro-organisms, and using blue-wavelength lasers to identify and quantify the micro-organisms in a real-time environment. Anyway, drop me a line if your interested in talking... - David / BootJockey

Everyone who's left comments on my space, you really brighten my day :o)

For David/bootjockey and anyone else who may or may not be curious, here's a little about my work.

My background is in mathematics/applied science and I'm working on biology/computational neuroscience now. In short, I use math to try to help answer questions in science. I'm mainly interested in systems neuroscience, understanding how groups of neurons work together and how the brain functions.

My current research is hopefully coming to a conclusion soon. I've been studying the hypothesis that music and higher order thinking (involved in mathematics, playing chess, spatial thinking) are connected. This is the hypothesis behind the "Mozart Effect" and all of the marketing behind those "baby mozart" and "make your kid smarter through classical music" products. The main idea behind that is that the way the brain works while listening or performing music and while working on a difficult math problem is a type of "creative mode" behavior. In a computer simulation I did, the activity of groups of neurons appear assymmetric, diverse patterns and evolve for many time steps.

I'm hoping to introduce some evidence that the calculations that have been used to justify the "mozart effect" are plausible, but lack biological evidence and to have a type of critique article published soon.
